BMI and PI Calculators

BMI Calculator

Introduction

You can use this Body Mass Index (BMI) calculator to easily check and determine your BMI to enable you to evaluate your current weight status based on your age. For your ease of use, you can either use the metric or imperial system to enter the data for measurement.

BMI Overview

The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a very widely used health metric that is used to measure and provide an estimate of an individual’s body fat and lean tissue based on their weight and height. It assesses the proportionality of your weight-to-height ratio and can provide valuable insights into your overall body composition and helps determine whether your weight falls within or outside a healthy range.

Calculating your BMI will help reveal whether you are classified as underweight, a healthy weight, overweight, or obese based on generally accepted metrics. These primary BMI ranges can be further broken down into specific subgroups, such as severe thinness or Class III obesity. Nevertheless, always keep in mind that the ideal BMI category at any instance can vary slightly depending on factors like age and demographic region.

There can be very severe consequences for your long-term health if you carry excess weight or experiencing malnutrition. BMI can serve as a highly useful screening tool to indicate whether lifestyle changes, further medical testing, or professional interventions are necessary but it is nevertheless not a perfect measurement of your overall well-being. Consult your own personal doctor if you need further advice.

Ponderal Index

For your convenience, this tool also automatically calculates your Ponderal Index alongside your BMI. The ponderal index (PI) is an anthropometric measure that evaluates an individual’s body weight relative to their height. The ponderal index calculator is also referred to as the PI Calculator, a corpulence index or Rohrer’s index. Similar to BMI, it determines whether a person has a healthy weight, is underweight, or is overweight, but it is often considered more accurate for very tall or very short individuals. The PI Calculator has higher sensitivity and specificity, so that if you are tall, your BMI may show that you are obese, but that is not necessarily true.
